ABOUT ME
As a Henrico-based professional and mother, I founded The Lucky Sparrow to bridge the gap between a fast-paced lifestyle and the meaningful connection found at the Mahjong table.
As a full-time professional and a busy mom of two little kids, my life is chaotic fun. Amidst the daily balancing act, I found an unexpected passion that became my favorite past-time: American Mahjong. What began as a personal pastime evolved into The Lucky Sparrow, a mission-driven business dedicated to the game’s technical discipline and its vibrant, modern community.
My approach to instruction is built on three core pillars:
Technical Proficiency: I teach strictly according to National Mahjongg League (NMJL) rules. While I may occasionally introduce a "table rule" for specific contexts, my priority is ensuring students possess the technical accuracy and etiquette to sit down at any table in the country with total confidence. To maintain this standard, I am a member of the Mahj Life Instructor Guild, committed to ongoing education in gameplay and pedagogy.
Market Representation: The Mahjong landscape is currently experiencing a beautiful resurgence in design and artistry. As a certified Oh My Mahjong Instructor, I serve as a resource for my students to navigate the wide range of retailers, sets, and accessories available today. Whether you are looking for your first set or your fifth, I provide a curated perspective on the wide range of options in the market, from tile or mat companies just starting out to Amazon finds.
Community Connection: Beyond the tiles, Mahjong is a powerful vehicle for social connection. I am dedicated to bringing people together across generations and backgrounds to find their own "moment of play." Whether you are a seasoned player looking to sharpen your strategy or have never touched a tile before, I believe there is a seat for you at the table. Look for local events here!
For me, Mahjong is more than just a game; it's a vibrant social outlet that connects me with friends, old and new. I absolutely love sharing this game, watching them learn the patterns, discover the strategy, and fall in love with the game just as I did. It’s an incredible feeling to help someone find their own moment of fun and connection, especially when they first shout “MAHJONG!”.

Fun facts about me:
Beyond TLS, I am also the Vice President Elect of Fund Development for the Junior League of Richmond. The JLR is near and dear to my heart as it contributes so much to our community through an incredible group of volunteer-oriented women. I’ve made so many friends through the League!
I am honored to share that I have been named one of Richmond’s Finest for 2026 by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation! Join me at the Brewer’s Ball on June 18, 2026 to celebrate, and keep an eye out for my Mahjong fundraising event in April!
My family has lived in both Japan and France for a number of years; my brother continues to live in Paris (he’s spent more of his life in France than the US). I look for every opportunity to connect with the global community - anyone looking to have a Mahjong lesson in Paris??
